Fitchburg State Shines At MASCAC Championships

Falcon men's team earns second place finish; women place fourth

PORTLAND, Maine (February 14, 2010) - The Fitchburg State men's and women's indoor track team traveled to the University of Southern Maine this weekend for the MASCAC/Alliance Championships. The Falcons men's team finished second overall in the MASCAC and fourth in the Alliance, while the women earned a fourth place MASCAC finish.

On the men's side, Fitchburg State received several outstanding performances led by junior Matt Muolo (Stoneham, Mass./Stoneham). Muolo registered DIII, ECAC and All-New England honors in the shot-put, finishing second in the MASCAC with a distance of 49'-5.50". The junior thrower also added a first place finish in the weight-throw, tallying a personal best throw of 53'-7" to qualifying for all three post-season honors.

Senior Kyle Callahan (Stoneham, Mass./Stoneham) also earned post-season honors, leading Fitchburg State in four field events. Callahan notched two, second place finishes in the triple jump (DIII - 43-9) and high-jump (5-11.25), while placing fourth in the pole vault (10-9) and fifth in the long-jump (20-1.50).

On the track, sophomore Julian Stakley (Gales Ferry, Conn./Ledyard) rung in three, post-season awards, qualifying for DIII, ECAC and All-New England's in the 55 m dash with a first-place time of 6.58. Stakley also notched a second place honor in the 200m dash (23.25),  while Mike Iasevoli (Ayer, Mass./Ayer) collected a third place showing (23.42).

Senior Kyle Schaeffer (Hudson, Mass./Hudson) was solid in the 3000m run, finishing third overall in the MASCAC with a time of 9:02.98. Sophomore Chris Kibler (Bath, Maine/Morse) added to the distance runners' success with a second place finish in the mile run (4:26.55), while junior Matt Spano (Gardner, Mass./Gardner) placed fourth with a time of 4:27.99.

The Falcon relay teams rounded out the men's day with a pair of DIII runs in both the 4x400 and 4x800 races. The 4x400 team of Jennings, Iasevoli, Matt Claar and Jimmy Petersen posted a first place time of 3:31.35, while the 4x800 team (Kibler, Lary, Spano, Wood), notched a second place finish.

Sophomore Madeline Merchant (Gardner, Mass./Monty Tech) led the Falcons women's team once again, posting DIII and ECAC qualifying marks in the process. Merchant finished second in the 55m dash with a time of 7.47, while finishing second in the 200m (27.07), fifth in the long jump (16-2) and sixth in the triple jump (32-2.5).

Freshman Emily Lane (Clinton, Conn./The Morgan School) picked up top honors in the high-jump, collecting a DIII mark of 5-2.25, while junior Erin Abbott (Warwick, Mass./Pioneer Valley) notched a height of 4-11.

Senior Lindsay Suprenant (Feeding Hills, Mass./Agawam) led all lady throwers, posting a personal best mark and DIII qualifying toss in the weight with a distance of 43-5.75. Suprenant finished second overall in the MASCAC, while freshman Shanissa Sampson (Marlborough, Mass./Marlborough) finished fourth with a personal best throw of 38-8.75.

The Falcons 4x200 relay team (Merchant, Almstrom, Taupier and Landry) also finished strong in the MASCAC Championships, totaling a time 2:02.02 for a second place, MASCAC showing.  

The Fitchburg State men's and women's track team will be in action next weekend as several members compete at the NCAA Division III New England's.
