Fitchburg State Travels To ECAC Championships

Merchant earns ECAC honors with two, top eight finishes

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (May 15, 2010) – Members of the Fitchburg State men’s and women’s track team were in action Friday afternoon as they competed at the ECAC Championships hosted by Springfield College.

Sophomore Madeline Merchant (Gardner, Mass./Monty Tech) stole the show for Fitchburg State, placing in the both the 100m and 200m dash. Merchant earned ECAC honors with a seventh place finish in the 100m (12.70), while capping her track events with another seventh place performance in the 200m (26.18). Merchant rounded out the day in the field, earning 15th in the triple jump with a distance of 10.69m.

The Falcon men also earned ECAC honors in the 4x100 relay, finishing fifth overall. Senior Devon Jennings (Brockton, Mass./Brockton), freshman Jimmy DiNuccio (Wilmington, Mass./Wilmington), senior Kyle Callahan (Stoneham, Mass./Stoneham) and sophomore Mike Iasevoli (Ayer, Mass./Ayer) blazed the competition, turning in a time of 42.66. The 4x400 team of Jennings, DiNuccio, Iasevoli and Petersen were also solid, finishing 16th overall with a time of 3:23.38.

Junior Matt Muolo (Stoneham, Mass./Stoneham) narrowly missed an ECAC honor in the shot-put, finishing ninth overall with a throw of 14.24m. He also turned in a tenth place finish in the discus, wrapping up the 2010 season with a throw of 43.77m.

Callahan and sophomore Chris Kibler (Bath, Maine/Morse) rounded out the men’s action on the track, posting a pair of top 20 performances. Callahan wrapped up his day with a 18th place effort in the 400m hurdles (57.29), while Kibler added a 17th place showing in the 1500m (4:01.43). Jennings concluded Fitchburg State’s field events with a 6.30m effort in the long jump.

Completing the Fitchburg State women heats were freshman Shanissa Sampson (Marlborough, Mass./Marlborough) and Emily Lane (Clinton, Conn./The Morgan School) who tallied a pair of 19th place finishes. Sampson drew a 33.10m javelin toss while Lane concluded the Falcons season with a 1.53m high jump.
