Merchant Named MASCAC Field Athlete of the Week

Gardner, Mass. Native earns fifth Outdoor Track weekly honor of the season


Sophomore Madeline Merchant collected her fifth
Outdoor MASCAC weekly honor of the season.

FITCHBURG, Mass. (May 18, 2010) – Sophomore Madeline Merchant (Gardner, Mass./Monty Tech) was named the MASCAC’s Outdoor Field Athlete of the Week as announced by the conference office Monday afternoon.

Merchant earns here fifth MASCAC weekly honor after leading the Fitchburg State track and field team at the ECAC Championships hosted by Springfield College. Merchant posted a 15th place finish in the triple jump with a distances of 10.69m while also earning All-ECAC honors with a pair of seventh place performances in the 100m (12.70) and 200m (26.18) dash

This season, Merchant experienced overwhelming success, qualifying for three post-season honors, including the Division III New England Championships, the All-New England Championships and ECAC Championships. She also earned MASCAC All-Conference honors after turning in three top performances at the MASCAC Championships. Merchant recorded a pair of first-place awards in the 100m (12.71) and 200m (26.20) dash, while also notching the triple jump crown with a distance of 11.15m.

The Fitchburg State men’s and women’s track team closed out their 2010 campaign this past week and currently await a bid to the NCAA National Championships.
